With every movement that CrossFit does we ask the question. “Why this movement?” And “How does it transfer into elite athleticism?”
The purpose of the overhead squat is two-fold. First, it’s the transfer movement to the Olympic snatch. The Olympic snatch is considered the world fastest movement becuase of the demand required by the athlete to move the barbell as fast as humanly possible from ground-to-overhead. Secondly, is it’s potential to develop the midline (the muscles that we engage under heavy load, located in the “midline” of our bodies). The success of the snatch is not strong legs. Matter a fact, it has more to deal with your ability to brace the midline under dynamic forces.
When an athlete has developed enough mid-line strength, and coordination to recieve the free-falling barbell, the snatch seems effortless. That’s why we use the overhead squat.
