What did you do for fitness before CrossFit? Did you play any sports growing up?  I’ve been playing sports since I was about 4 years old.  I’m actually hard pressed to think of a childhood memory that didn’t involve playing some sport.  My main sports were soccer, track, and baseball in middle school and high school.  I was actually lucky enough to play on an international soccer team for three years during high school and got to travel all over the world! During college I was on the crew, soccer, softball, lacrosse and rugby team. After college I discovered triathlon and fell in love with the sport.  I wound up getting sponsored, racing ironman and coaching while running a triathlon shop in NYC.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? I had my first child, Taylor, about 6 months after moving to Naples. Taylor was born a little early and was born with very little muscle tone.  After spending about 2 years taking care of Taylor’s medical issues I realized that I had totally lost all of my fitness and had gained a ton of weight. I didn’t have enough time to get back into triathlon so I started looking around for something that wouldn’t take too much time but would kick my butt into shape.  I did some ‘googling’ and decided CrossFit was probably a perfect fit for both my personality and time restrictions. I found a gym and tried out a class.

What was your first workout and how did it go? How did you feel after? My first WOD is a bit of a blur but I remember burpees, squats and I think deadlifts.  I would say the workout was a little overwhelming given I was so out of shape and totally clueless about form but at the same time it definitely peaked my interest. I remember being so sore for at least 2-3 days after that workout but to be honest that is what kept me coming back … I love feeling sore since it makes you feel like you accomplished something!

Favorite CF Movements: Thrusters and Cleans … I love a challenge!

Least Favorite Movements: Doubles … I feel like I was never able to make any progress with these!

Favorite Cheat Meal: There are so many its hard to say but I do love my pasta after all I’m Italian!

Favorite Paleo Meal: Shepherd’s pie(modified of course ;))

What’s one thing that most people don’t know about you? Haha … most of my friends/family know everything about me … I tend to talk a lot but I guess most people don’t know that I like to read … I tend to do it when no one is around and it goes against my personality since I have a hard time staying still!

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)? I feel strong in a way that is so different from the strength I gained in the other sports I have played. My energy levels are up but at the same time I’m sleeping so much better at night.  Since combining the paleo diet with the CrossFit workouts i’m finally making some progress towards losing weight and more importantly improving my body composition!

What sort of unexpected changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit? I finally feel like its ok for me to take care of myself and not feel guilty … I’ve struggled over the last few years to balance spending time with my kids and taking care of myself.

Any advice for people just getting started or new to CrossFit? Don’t be scared … just keep showing up!  It will always hurt after the workout but you will learn to embrace the pain!

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit? I mainly spend my extra time hanging out with my kids … having a 6 year old and a 10 month old in the house doesn’t leave much time for hobbies.  I do dream about getting back into cycling and triathlon but no time for that now!

What did you do for fitness before CrossFit? Did you play any sports growing up? I was considered the neighborhood tomboy in a skirt kind of kid. I grew up in a neighborhood where the kids were not allowed in the house till the street lights came on. The neighborhood kids and I were always playing something from; baseball, basketball, kickball, manhunt, fishing, and when winter came around it was ice skating, slaying, and manhunt in the snow.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? A friend of mine kept talking about someone she new that was doing crossfit. I looking into it when I met her and saw just how fit she was. I was sold!

What was your first workout and how did it go? How did you feel after? My first workout was Clean Jerks, Rowing, and Double Unders. Jump roping was something I didn’t mind so much as a little kid. Now that I am old, it is a workout!!!

Favorite CF Movements:  Clean Jerks / Clean Squats – I feel like I get a full body workout with these and Kirk is always pushing me beyond what “I think” I can do..

Least Favorite Movements: Pull Ups – #Goals.. I will get these!!

Favorite Cheat Meal: Brownies and Rice Krispy Treats

Favorite Paleo Meal: Sweet potatoes, steak, asparagus, and Paleo brownies

What’s one thing that most people don’t know about you? I was originally born in Reno, NV but we moved right away to CT. I spent half my life there and the other half down here.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)? I was not motivated as much as I am now. Weight was becoming easier and easier to tack on and not so easy to keep off. I found myself even becoming more irritable. Working out is a huge stress reliever and changing a few things in my diet has helped with the energy and irritability as well. I am starting to drop the weight and definition is coming back!

What sort of unexpected changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit? Crossfit introduced me to different mobility movements that have helped so much with lower back pain and knee issues. It has also helped widen the different types of workouts that I do, so they are not the same thing all the time and working the same muscles. The biggest thing I have learned through crossfit was diet, I had no idea what Paleo really was or how different foods effected your body. Because of that introduction, I am amazed at what foods do for healing and how much “CRAP” the food industry dumps into food.

Any advice for people just getting started or new to CrossFit? Mobility is a huge key factor to working out, make sure you do it before and after class and throughout the day. It not only helps with being sore, it also helps you open up those areas to get a better workout out.

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit? My daughter plays softball and I have been involved as president on the board for little league and now on the board for her travel team. It keeps me very busy but my talent to multitask helps a great deal. I also own my own company doing bookkeeping for small businesses on the side. I try to stay as active as possible because I refuse to get old. So I also enjoy getting together with friends for a BBQ or picnic and playing a competitive game of kickball. My FAV!

What did you do for fitness before CrossFit? Did you play any sports growing up? Before CrossFit, I would do various workouts I found on Pinterest and did Zumba at AnytimeFitness, and run from time to time. I never really played sports growing up, I spent my time at rodeos. I barrel raced and even rode bulls for a little while, but I was all about horse-back riding.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? My very first exposure to a CrossFit work out was actually when I was in the Fire Academy, one of my classmates was a trainer and he incorperated it into our daily PT workouts. Paul Long actually got me introduced to CrossFit Naples.

What was your first workout and how did it go? How did you feel after? My first workout at CrossFit Naples was during the ‘bring a friend week’ a while back. It was partnered Kettle Bell Swings, Running, and Wall Balls. I was practically dead afterwards, but it was a pretty amazing feeling!

Favorite CF Movements: I love Handstands and Box Jumps! And since I began CrossFit, I have begun to really like burpees!

Least Favorite Movements: I do not like Wall Balls! The movement seems so simple, but for some reason I just have a difficult time with them!

Favorite Cheat Meal: Mmmm…I love almost anything sweet! Ice cream and chocolate cake are my favorite!

Favorite Paleo Meal: Grilled steak, corn on the cob and/or baked brussel sprouts, and sweet potatoes.

What’s one thing that most people don’t know about you? If you haven’t known me very long, you probably don’t know I used to run in beauty pageants. I have acquired 8 “titles”! My mom put me in my first pageant when I was just 2 years old.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)?  I’ve noticed I’ve toned up a bit in my thighs and abdomen, and my endurance and stregnth have made some improvement too.

What sort of unexpected changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit? I’ve gotten sore in places I didn’t know I could!

Any advice for people just getting started or new to CrossFit? Stick with it! I find that it is actually a lot of fun doing CrossFit, not stagnant and boring like it was when I worked out by myself, even when the workout is a real Killer!

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit? Outside of CrossFit and work I like to do things that are outside. I play softball, go camping/hunting, and when I get the chance, go on a friend’s boat! I just like to be pretty active.

Athlete Spotlight- Leila E.

Hometown: Chicago

Age: 20

Profession: Hair stylist (in the making)

What did you do for fitness before CrossFit? Did you play any sports growing up? Growing up I was a competitive dancer and gymnast. At the age of 7 I joined an all-star cheerleading team and ended up traveling all over with them until I was 19. Aside from that, I didn’t do much besides the occasional “gym sessions”.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Friends were constantly telling me I needed to check out crossfit because of my gymnastics background but I kept putting it off. Finally I got invited to “bring a friend week” and since that day I’ve been in love.

What was your first workout and how did it go? How did you feel after? My first workout was burpees and deadlifts. I was in pain and out of breath but I loved every second. I remember going to get gas after and my legs went numb.

Favorite CF Movements: Rowing, thrusters, snatch.

Least Favorite Movements: Anything that involves running.. and also cleans.

Favorite Cheat Meal: Easy… chocolate!!!

Favorite Paleo Meal: I’m a plain jane.. I enjoy a nice piece of chicken with veggies.

What’s one thing that most people don’t know about you?  I’ve had many injuries… I broke my foot falling out of the shower and I actually begged the doctor to take the cast off the day before a competition so I could compete then he put it back on once I got home. Oh I’m also fluent in sign language!

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)?  I’ve become a stronger athlete in these 3 short months. Sometimes I wake up and muscles that I never knew existed will be sore. My conditioning has improved tremendously since bootcamp (I was always out of breath in the warmup…)!! I remember telling Daija, “I don’t think I can deadlift 100lbs” and now i’m doing 265lbs.

What sort of unexpected changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit?  Growing up I was competitive with everything I did. Joining crossfit has given me an outlet to be competitive with myself (and Marty). It’s definitely fun to hit a PR and it makes working out fun. Sometimes I’ll be at work and I picture myself doing a lift and then i’ll hear mario’s voice correcting me and so I visualize myself hitting it perfect. It’s crazy how much it takes over your life.

Any advice for people just getting started or new to CrossFit? Don’t ever give up. It’s not going to get easier, but you will definitely get stronger!! I also recommend going to every wod that includes your weaknesses or your least favorite movements. How are you going to get stronger if you only go to the ones you like? Everyone wants the best for you and everyone will support you, that’s what makes this community so great!!

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit? I’m a huge fan of country concerts. I also love going to the beach, boating, shopping, all the typical girly girl stuff.  But most of all I love hanging out with my mom, she’s my best friend!

What did you do for fitness before CrossFit? Did you play any sports growing up? I was in gymnastics when i was really young, and played soccer through high school. After that, I mainly considered the running around I did at work, up and down stairs all day, to be my “exercise”.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? I had heard the term crossfit from somewhere, and was curious to learn what it was. I did a google search and Crossfit Naples was the first thing to come up. I was pretty much sold on it when I saw the picture of the gymnastics rings on the website.

What was your first workout and how did it go? How did you feel after? My first workout was a team effort, rowing 2000m then running 2000m. I felt alright, it was a bit humbling to realize how poor my cardio conditioning had been. But I knew I would be back for more.

Favorite CF Movements: Back squats. Pull ups. Olympic Lifts.

Least Favorite Movements: Thrusters and burpees.

Favorite Cheat Meal: Everything I make at work is a cheat meal! And I’m helpless against the power of a chocolate frosted donut.

Favorite Paleo Meal: Carne asada with avocados.

What’s one thing that most people don’t know about you? I’ve been growing my hair out for the last 3 years, so that I can donate it to Wigs for Kids. It is finally ready to be cut, just in time for the New Year.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)? Before crossfit, I was skinny fat. I was very thin, with no muscles to be found. Co-workers gave me the nickname string bean. Since starting crossfit, I have seen incredible strength gains. I couldn’t back squat my bodyweight when I started. Now I can squat 100# over bodyweight! Muscles have appeared that I’ve never really had before. I can run farther for long periods of time.

What sort of unexpected changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit?  I’ve become more interested and excited about physical activity and working out, and pushing myself harder, when before crossfit I lived a fairly sedentary life. I am also surprised by the way it has helped me grow as a person, by taking me out of my comfort zone and putting me into stressful situations (like that moment when you discover you are only 8 thrusters into Fran…) Crossfit has helped build mental strength as well as physical.

Any advice for people just getting started or new to CrossFit? Welcome to the best community of Crossfitters available in Southwest Florida. Stick with it, trust the coaches to help you reach your fitness goals. Embrace the community, we are all here to support and push each other towards higher levels of fitness. Don’t be discouraged if you feel like you “aren’t as good” as the person next to you. The only person you have to compete against is yourself, and you are already winning just by being here.

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit? Besides being a crossfit enthusiast, I am also a pastry chef. I love making cheesecake. I am also a huge fan of Game of Thrones, both the tv and book series. I could spend hours talking about it, I’m a huge nerd in that regard.

Athlete Spotlight- Cassie D.

Hometown: Born in Michigan but lived in Naples/Marco Island since I was 2

Age: 31

Profession: Real Estate Broker/Help to run a non-profit organization, work at White House Black Market on 5th and now I will be assisting coaching CF Kids!

What did you do for fitness before CrossFit? Did you play any sports growing up? I have done many different things for Fitness; several types of classes from Hardcore at the Y to Zumba, kickboxing, pilates, yoga, etc. If I was unable to get to the gym I would run.  No sports in high school, I worked too much.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? I saw a Groupon for the Bootcamp you offered in September 13′ but since I have a hard time committing I decided to check out one of your “free trial classes” and instantly knew I found my jam!

What was your first workout and how did it go? How did you feel after?  All I remember was doing handstand pushups and thinking it was so much more fun then going to the boring gym.  I felt sick, like I wanted to throw up, energized and fantastic all at the same time!

Favorite CF Movements: Handstand pushups, muscle ups & sit ups

Least Favorite Movements: Rowing, running, OH squats

Favorite Cheat Meal: Pepperoni Pizza all day with a chocolate lava bomb and a side of vanilla ice cream

Favorite Paleo Meal: Steak, sweet potatoes & veggies.  For dessert I mash two bananas and freeze them for an hour or so….awesome.

What’s one thing that most people don’t know about you? I am obsessive about keeping my house in order.  I can’t walk out the door unless everything is in it’s place.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)? I have seen more muscle definition then I ever have in the past & now truly enjoy exercising!  I have also learned a lot from you guys about what to eat & what not to eat.  That has made a HUGE difference in my energy levels, physical results, etc.

What sort of unexpected changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit? I know from going to CF that if you can get through the really tough stuff there is a light at the end of the tunnel.  Quitting isn’t an option and when it’s over you feel amazing!  I feel much more confident then I did the first day I walked into class.  We have such an awesome group of people & coaches that constantly motivate and lift each other up.  That has helped me as much as the actual physical results.

Any advice for people just getting started or new to CrossFit?  DON’T QUIT! If you want to see where you will be at in one year from now look at the choices you are making today.

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit? My main hobbies are my hubby & our 3 kids. Shaun and I alternate planning a surprise weekend away once every three months and have a date night once a week.  We also have lots of fun with the kiddos, boating, fishing, going to the movies, etc.  We are very involved with classes at our church and activities there.
