Power Couple: Jessica and Raul

What made you guys decide to take on CrossFit together?

We definitely wanted to do something different to challenge ourselves and my sister, Victoria was definitely another positive influence pushing us to join!

What do you find yourself doing to motivate each other?

Definitely reminding each other to set our alarms for the next day or communicating throughout the day to remind ourselves even when we’re tired or not “in the mood” to work out.

Who’s the Real healthy chef in the house?

I am. Raul can eat anything and everything and be OK and I have to really work hard and plan ahead what I eat.

How do you both make it work and still manage to workout each week?

We make it a priority to go at least 3-4 times a week after work and to barbell club.

Power Couple – Paul & Juli K.

What made you guys decide to take on CrossFit together?

Paul – (Age 74) When we began – overweight, pre diabetic, left shoulder issues, lack of mobility and fitness.  Now has lost 30 plus pounds, improved left shoulder flexibility, greatly improved mobility/fitness.  Juli – (Age 69) When we began – Overweight, high blood pressure, lack of mobility and fitness.  Now has lost about 20 pounds, reduction in BP meds by ½, significantly improved mobility and fitness. Ran 1st 5K in under an hour in May 2015.  We spotted the sign for Crossfit Naples in August 2014 and went together to explore the facility. Mario, met with us about the program and signed us up for personal training. We were very out of shape. Could not easily get up off the floor, were tentative about walking down stairs, lifting packages, Paul had shoulder issues, etc.

What do you find yourself doing to motivate each other?

Like most people, we are lazy and often don’t make the time for home workouts – even though we have directions. There are some days that we are less enthusiastic about working out at the box, but we know how important it is. Our motivation is knowing that Mario will have a well-planned workout to challenge us geared to our fitness level. There was an ad during the Crossfit Games that featured a 70’s plus lady with knee and hip replacements working out to improve her quality of life. Like her, we have discovered that vigorous workouts are needed for people of every age to maintain flexibility, endurance and strength for as long as possible. Continue reading…

1.     What made you guys decide to take on CrossFit together?

We have always been an active couple.  Whether it was with my martial arts or Renee’s boot camps, we were always working out.  Once we moved last year and with CrossFit Naples being so close to our new home, I was excited to try it based on my own research and the brief exposure I had to it from my old gym.  Renee really struggled to find a local gym that she enjoyed and could see results from, so after seeing how much fun I was having she decided to give it a try as well.

2.     What do you find yourself doing to motivate each other?

The biggest challenge we face is the early morning workouts.  I don’t know many people that enjoy waking up in the small hours of the dawn and going straight into a really challenging workout. I’m probably an exception to that rule (I’m definitely a morning person), but between the two of us we make sure that we get our time in and are really thankful for the support that the other person offers.  Most times the only additional motivation we need to offer one another is a quick reminder of how good it feels after a workout in order to get over the “should I or shouldn’t I?” internal battle we all face.  Working out together and having a partner to answer to also offers up a bit of accountability and that doesn’t hurt at all either.

3.     Who’s the real paleo chef in the house?

I’d have to say that I take on most of the household cooking.  Renee doesn’t particularly enjoy eating meat (though she’ll steal a bite or two now and again) and she’s basically a vegetarian, so we often end up eating variations of the same Paleo-based meal.  She’ll take in more vegetable protein or fish and I go more for lean meats.  It can be very challenging adhering to any sort of diet, but Paleo seems to agree with my body and lifestyle and Renee is making it work, too.

4.     How do you both make it work with your busy schedules to get your workouts in each week?

The real question isn’t how you make it work but rather if you really want it to or not.  If the answer is yes, you find time and a way to make it work out, one way or another.  For us, the solution is early morning workouts.  We sacrifice an hour of extra sleep a few days a week in order to get our workouts in, meaning we didn’t really have to give anything up (other than the sleep, of course) from the rest of our lives.  Even if that wasn’t an option, however, we’d make sure we found the time to get our workouts in.  A healthy lifestyle is too valuable a thing to discard, and the benefits are too awesome!

Power Couple: Jason & Victoria

What made you guys decide to take on CrossFit together?

Victoria has running for several years now, she would always train for her races while I was pretty much not doing any sort of fitness training. It always bothered her that I never worked out. So one day she had a fantastic idea for us both to join boot camp and eventually crossfit.

What do you find yourself doing to motivate each other?

We keep each other accountable to going to morning classes by encouraging each other and discussing the workout. And our small motivations are definitely showing our improvements and progress to each other.

Who’s the real paleo chef in the house?

Jason pays attention to what he needs to eat more than I do. While I’m more on the go throughout the morning and afternoon it’s hard for me to get meals together instead of eating out. Jason has time to make his meals , but eating out hinders both of us to really push for better eating and it’s something we’re working on.

How do you both make it work with your busy school schedules to get your workouts in each week?

We both have to sacrifice some sleep to do our workouts in the morning. We workout on days where we have to go to school an hour later . Vicky has always been a morning person so this was more difficult for me to get used to, but it really has helped in my concentration in class.

Power Couple- Jody & Paul L.

1.How do you make it work with your busy schedule? All about working together! As much as we try to plan the days we would like to workout both of our work schedules can change daily/weekly so it’s constant communication with each other. Pretty much everyone has seen our son Ryan hanging out, we are fortunate that he loves Crossfit Naples and doesn’t mind joining us so mom and dad can workout together!

2.What do you find yourself doing to motivate each other? When we do get a chance to workout at the same time we have a healthy competition with one another, but we are always pushing each other as well. Paul is great, if I say I’m so tired I don’t know if I’m going tonight he’ll say “suck it up” you’re going!

3.Who’s the Real Paleo chef in the house? Hands down its Paul!  I’m terrible in the kitchen! Unless you like your food extra crispy you really don’t want me to cook!

4.You’ve been at CF Naples for over 3 years. What is the secret?

  • Our amazing coaches! You guys constantly have our back! And always motivating us and you check up on us if you haven’t seen one us in a couple days.
  • The overall atmosphere at CF Naples there’s constantly challenges or “uncomfortable” movements or something your not great at, however everyone at CF Naples makes you feel comfortable and help you overcome your “fears”. We only hope we can do the same for others.
  • For me (Jody) it’s a huge stress relief too it helps mentally when I’m beating myself up physically. Mario always knows with one look if I’m stressed out coming in and says “just work it out” and at the end asks “feel better”?

5.What do you love most about each other? Paul as a father!  He is amazing with Ryan. I couldn’t have been more blessed! And of course as we all know Paul’s humor! Laughing is healthy for you and I love it…he’s always making me laugh and he always makes me feel amazing!I love that Jody is my biggest fan and she is always there for me when I need her. She’s a huge support and helps me finish what I start (as far as projects) and she keeps me in “check” she makes sure I don’t do anything stupid!
