My Fitness Journey

Guest Post by Beth Atkinson. Growing up I was not raised in a home where sports and fitness were embraced with open arms and made apart of our daily routines. I did not play any sports growing up or belong to any athletic team where I felt like I was good enough. During college, I did try a few times to go to a regular commercial gym; however, my attempts always resulted in failure. I knew I didn’t really know how to exercise the right way, but I was too scared to ask for help. I was very uncomfortable as everyone around me in the commercial gym seemed to have their routine and was making progress in their fitness journey. So, I quit…Every. Single. Time.

After three kids, a career change, and a supportive girl friend, I found Crossfit Naples. One of my best friends always talked about her love for running and going to the workout.  She told me about this workout place (and honestly I didn’t even know what Crossfit meant) where the coaches would help me learn the techniques and would always make sure the workout was tailored to my own fitness level. On November 13, 2012 at 2:30pm, I stepped out of my comfort zone and into a facility that felt totally comfortable. It started with a Baseline Challenge, which I had no idea included movements that I had NEVER done in my life. I honestly thought my 2:30pm appointment was to teach me about the equipment and how the gym worked. Little did I know, I was going to get the most wonderful joy of finishing the hardest workout I had ever done in my life. Let’s just say that Mario told me I had 15 minutes to complete the workout and I did it (maybe not very well) in 14:58. So began my journey in exercising at Crossfit Naples!

I am happy to say that after two years, of twice a week classes, I feel more confident then ever about my fitness capabilities and knowledge.  The coaches at CFN have done a fantastic job with scheduling, because each workout of the day seems to be better than the last and exactly what I needed. It keeps me coming back for more!

My fitness journey has just begun (yes, anyone can start at any age) and I am learning more and more about myself with each workout.  I know that I can push myself a little harder and it is going to be all right at the end of the workout. My husband loves to hear my gym stories about a new skill that I learned or about how much weight I lifted and how many times I did each movement.  I feel like I am learning with each workout and that is important to me.

I also use my experiences at CFN to teach my children. The most important lesson that I have learned and pass on to my kids is to help those who struggle, whether it be on the playing field, in the classroom our at a friends house.  My CFN family supports me at each workout no matter what, because finishing last is better than not trying at all.  I may not be the best, but I am better than when I started, and that’s what counts!

As I reflect on my two years at CFN, one word comes to mind and that is DETERMINED. I am DETERMINED to do my best at each workout and my hard work is paying off. I am forever grateful for Mario and the coaching that he has provided to me.
