WHY I’M DOING THE OPEN- Suzanne H.

Occupation: Pilot
Family: Boyfriend/life partner of 22 years.

What do you like to do outside CrossFit?

Although my boyfriend doesn’t do “CrossFit” at a gym, he loves to ride his bike. We did buy CF equipment like a medicine ball, kettlebell, and some dumbbells. He’s starting to do a little cross-training with me at home. We are slowly building a gym at home so he can do some weightlifting. This also gives me a way to train when I can’t make it to class.

Classes per week:
If my schedule allows, I usually train six days a week. If I can’t get it in at CrossFit Naples I will do my own workout at the house.

How many years have you been CrossFitting?
I’ve been training for just over  2 years.

How many years have you done the Open?
This is my first year.

Why did you choose to compete in the Open this year?
I want a baseline score that I can work from so I can see where I stand amongst the masses. I also want to know how much I improve next year. I also think that the Open is a great way to find out what I might need to work on.

What is your favorite part about the Open?
I love the Open competition the most because of the camaraderie and cheering for other athletes. The Open pushes our limits and that’s what is great about competition, you learn that you always have a little more to give. I know that I’m just competing and doing workouts like I normally do at CF but I can’t help but get nervous and anxious watching the workout get announced and right before I’m about to compete! I’m that girl who checks her email every hour on Sunday to see the workouts that are coming up for the week!

Anything you would like to add?
I am writing this after my first Open Workout and it was great. Wanted to die after but that means I was pushing myself harder than maybe I would in a regular class because everyone was cheering. I felt like they all wanted me to succeed. I just hope I was as helpful to them when it was my turn to cheer. T
